Alsace is one of the most famous wine regions in France located in the North East of France (bordering Germany) and is nestled between the Vosges mountain range and the Rhine river which helps create its own unique micro climate.
The soil composition is also truly unique to Alsace. Complex and diverse it is often referred to as ‘a mosaic’ with a mix of granite, limestone, sandstone and volcanic rock.
The soil coupled with the relatively cool climate (preserves the acidity) provides the perfect conditions for growing aromatic white wines particularly Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and their more flamboyant sibling Gewurztraminer. These wines are typically characterised as being fresh, crisp and highly expressive.
The vineyards form part of a strip running north > south along the eastern side of the Vosges mountain range. The western facing side of the mountain range is exposed to the colder winds and captures most of the rain fall as the air moves up over the range leaving the Eastern slopes in the ‘rain shadow’ which is much drier and able to enjoy long uninterrupted days of sunlight which is perfect for white wines. This part of Alsace typically records has the least amount of rain fall of any area in France.
Made using 100% Pinot Noir Grapes. Pinot Noir is the only grape cultivated in Alsace that is used for producing red and rosé wines. Although Alsace has a long history of growing Pinot Noir the region has actually benefitted from the effects of global warming and is gaining recognition. As you would expect from a French Pinot Noir the “origine’ has a light body with low tannins but is complex with relatively high acidity. On the nose we are greeted with raspberries, strawberries and red currents. A wonderfully versatile wine which can be paired with Tagine or Skirt steak with grilled onions.
