La Romane is a superb Bordeaux wine from Château Meillac. Located in the Fronsadais region, a geological extension towards the southwest of the appellations of Fronsac and Saint-Émilion, it is an intense wine, with bright reflections, a strong scent of candied red fruit and a gorgeous grilled wood perfume. The nose is harmoniously engaging, and in the mouth it is ample, intense, thick and velvety with fruit flavours and delicate, refined tannins.

The vines have an average age of 30 years, wine-making techniques are traditional and the wine is matured in 100% new oak barrels for 14 months.

"This is a very good wine from Château Meillac in Bordeaux. It's labelled as a Bordeaux Supérieur and is from the outstanding 2016 vintage in Bordeaux. A merlot dominant blend from the Fronsadais region near Libourne and Saint-Émilion on the right bank in Bordeaux, it has aromatics of earth, spice, plums, blackcurrant and tobacco. The palate has good length and a lovely texture. A rather delicious and moreish release.

"Lately I have been impressed by some terrific examples of Bordeaux Superieur’s which have been challenging the old guard of the appellation system in Bordeaux. You see, the vines are grown on similar terroirs to those of Saint Emilion or Pauillac, the wines are made with as much passion as Angélus or Latour; and, would you believe it, these smaller producers’ wines are seriously tasty and amazingly good value; La Romane by Château Meillac fits in this category.

With an average of 30 years old vines grown on soils near and typical to Saint-Emilion’s the wine is showing a standard beyond its price point. The wine is typically made of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, with classic aromas of fresh blackberry and strawberry, integrated with an attractive floral perfume hiding its age. A definite premium cuvée with its 100% new oak, it is all restrained and it’s a good thing; mocha and toasted nuts marry the fruit so well. On the palate, it is rich, voluptuous

and structured. The tannins are present and ensure that the wine will stand the test of time, but of course you can enjoy this wine in its relative youth without hesitation. Wines like this give me faith that I don’t have to break the bank to drink premium Bordeaux wines. Loic Le Calvez – Wine Truth
